What does a skip cost in Teesside?
A 2 to 3 yard mini skip on a Teesside drive sits at £90 to £130 for a standard hire in 2026. A 4 yard midi runs £120 to £160, the 6 to 8 yard builders skip that most renovations end up needing lands at £160 to £240, and a 12 yard bulky-waste skip is £260 to £350. Wait and load, where the lorry stays on site while you fill it, starts at £120 and skips the permit question entirely.
Two things move a price after size: what goes in it, and where it sits. Clean rubble and soil weigh a lot but tip cheaply, mixed household waste tips dearer per tonne, and anything needing separate handling (mattresses, plasterboard, tyres, fridges) carries its own line. If the skip has to stand on the road rather than your drive, a council permit is added on top.
| Skip | Typical price | Roughly holds |
|---|---|---|
| Mini skip, 2 to 3 yard | £90 to £130 | 25 to 35 bin bags, small rubble loads |
| Midi skip, 4 yard | £120 to £160 | Bathroom strip-out, small garden clearance |
| Builders skip, 6 to 8 yard | £160 to £240 | Kitchen refit, full house clearance |
| Large skip, 12 yard | £260 to £350 | Bulky light waste, loft and garage strip-outs |
| Wait and load | from £120 | No permit needed, loaded within the hour |
| Road permit, where required | £30 to £60 | Council charge, added to the quote |
The size-by-size breakdown, including how many bin bags actually fit in each, is in the Teesside skip hire cost guide.
Teesside streets decide the skip as much as the job does
Ask any driver on this patch and they will tell you the delivery matters more than the tonnage. The tight terraced grids of Gresham, Newport and the Hartlepool Headland leave no off-street space at all, so it is a road permit and cones or nothing. The interwar semis of Billingham, Thornaby and Acklam usually have a driveway with just enough width for a mini or a midi, but not always enough for the lorry to swing. Ingleby Barwick and the newer Wynyard closes have block-paved drives that owners rightly want protecting, so boards under the feet are worth asking for. And on the coastal streets of Redcar and Saltburn, parked cars on both sides mean the delivery window matters more than the price.
What a straight skip hire quote includes
Skip hire looks like a commodity until the extras arrive. A proper quote states all of it upfront.
- Delivery, hire and collection: one price covering the drop, the standard hire period (usually one to two weeks) and the exchange or removal at the end.
- Tipping and disposal: the landfill tax and gate fees are in the figure, not billed afterwards by weight, as long as you stay inside the agreed waste type.
- A registered waste carrier: the operator holds an Environment Agency carrier licence, and your waste transfer note follows the load.
- The permit position: if the skip goes on a public road, the council licence and the lights and cones that go with it are quoted, not assumed.
- A named fill level: level-load only, because an overloaded skip is one the driver is legally not allowed to lift.
- The prohibited list in writing: what cannot go in, and what it costs to have those items taken separately.
Where to start
Most people arrive with one of three questions. What will it cost is answered in the 2026 cost guide, which size do I need is settled in the skip size guide, and can it go on the road is covered by the permits guide for all four Teesside councils. If you already know the answers, the quote form takes about two minutes, or you can get in touch.
