Which skip size do I need?
A 2 to 3 yard mini takes about 25 to 35 bin bags and suits one small room or a heavy rubble load. A 4 yard midi takes 40 to 45 bags. A 6 to 8 yard builders skip handles a renovation or full house clearance. A 12 yard is for bulky light waste only, never rubble.
Sizes translated into real jobs
Cubic yards mean nothing to most people until they are stood in a garden holding a broken wardrobe. This is the same information in the units people actually think in.

The weight rule that trips everyone up
Volume is only half the question. Skip lorries have a legal maximum weight, and dense material reaches it long before the container looks full. Soil, concrete, brick, tiles and plasterboard are all heavy, so for those loads the honest advice is a smaller skip filled to a marked line rather than a big one filled halfway and refused at the kerb. Light waste, sofas, timber, insulation, cardboard, is the opposite: it fills volume fast and weighs almost nothing, which is exactly what the 12 yard exists for.
Space on the ground
- Mini: around 2.5 metres long. Fits a standard Teesside semi driveway alongside a parked car in many cases.
- Midi: around 3 to 3.5 metres. Fits most drives, but usually instead of the car rather than beside it.
- Builders: around 4 to 5 metres, and it needs firm ground plus a clear swing for the lorry arms.
- Large: six metres and up, realistically a detached driveway, a yard or a car park.
Overhead matters as much as ground length. Low branches, telephone lines and carport roofs stop a delivery just as effectively as a narrow gate, so look up before booking.
The classic sizing mistakes
Going one size too small is the expensive one, because a second skip means a second delivery and collection charge, and the whole point of the exercise was one trip. Going too big is rarer but wasteful, especially on heavy waste where the extra capacity is legally unusable. And forgetting the items that need separate handling is the sneaky one: mattresses, fridges and plasterboard have their own rules whatever the size, so mention them when you ask. Sizing without guessing
Bag or stack everything you can before you book. Twenty bags in a hallway is a mini. A hallway plus a full garden's cuttings is a midi. A room stripped to the plaster is a builders skip. Once the pile exists you are estimating from something real instead of from optimism, which is how most people end up with the wrong container.
